Renovator’s apprentice
TV host tackles his own home improvement

It’s a simple premise: get into a taxi and answer trivia questions. Get them right and win some cash; get them wrong and you might have to walk the rest of the way.

Adam Growe is the host of this hilarity on Cash Cab (airing on the Discovery Channel).

Growe has been making people laugh ever since university, when he first attempted stand-up comedy. A mainstay of the Canadian comedy scene, he has starred in his own Just for Laughs gala and appeared on CTV’s Comedy NOW! and CBC's COMICS!

He’s currently touring his one-man show, The Adam Growe Comedy & Quiz Showe.

Growe spent this past summer renovating his basement under the watchful eye of the man known as the Reno Coach.

“[He] brings his tools and knowledge to the project and teaches you what to do, all the while supervising,” says Growe. “I was running wires and framing ... the project was gruelling – drywalling and grouting is not fun.”

Growe invited Star Spaces into his home.

Q: How would you describe your home in one word?

A: Diaper-free.

Q: Tell us about your home.

A: It is an 1,800-square foot, brick, detached 2.5-storey home. It is located in the Junction/High Park area of Toronto. It is over 100 years old. We’ve opened up the main floor and renovated the basement.

Q: What attracted you to this space?

A: It was a simple, solid space for a family of [soon to be at the time] five.

Q: Who shares your home?

A: My wife Julie and my three children.

Q: What is your favourite room and why?

A: It’s a tie between the new bathroom in the basement and the big, snuggly wicker chair in a sunny corner of the dining room on the main floor. They are both the most comfortable places to sit and relax. I also love to cook, so I’d have to say the kitchen.

Q: How would you describe your decorating style?

A: I like open-concept, warm and welcoming environments. There is a great social aspect to our home. We enjoy entertaining. Our neighbours know that they don’t have to stop at the front door. They are welcome to come in take off their shoes and sit down.

The main living space is painted dark grey and white. The upper level is painted a light grey. The basement is natural cream, with some taupe broadloom and some grey tile. We have photographs of our kids adorning one of the living room walls. My stepmother is an artist. Practically the only art we have on our walls in hers.

Q: What is your fondest memory in this home?

A: It’s a tie between bringing home our third baby and wrestling with the kids in our new family room.

Q: Weekends at home, what are we most likely to find you doing?

A: In the spring and summer, sitting on the porch with a refreshment. In the fall and winter, sitting in the sun chair in the dining room with a refreshment.

Q: If your walls could talk, what would they say?

A: Thank you, thank you for not drilling any artwork into us! Please ensure you continue to be uncultured.
