Make your balcony blissful
By 24 Hours Toronto

Take advantage of the great weather and make the most of your balcony, no matter the size.

A comfortable place to sit among some beautiful plants is just what you need to relax after a long day. Consider these important tips when decorating outdoor spaces, especially important for balconies.

The first element to consider is shade. A high-rise apartment balcony may afford a great view above the treetops but may not provide protection from the hottest sun. Don't let this deter you from enjoying a wonderful view. Adding a canopy, umbrella or trellis may be all it needs. Do make sure that everything is firmly secured as wind can be a problem.

The second element to consider is furniture scale. Use graph paper to draw out a floor plan of your balcony space. Measure the furniture you want to make sure it will fit comfortably in your plan.

Don't forget to decide on the space's function: How do you plan to use the space? For breakfast? For napping? Do you need seating for two or would one great lounger suit your needs better?

A third important element in outdoor decor is weather-friendly materials for furnishings, fabrics, planters and area rugs. Durable materials such as teak, resin or metal furnishings are easiest. Choose fabrics that are fade, water and stain resistant. Choose durable area rugs in synthetic fibers or natural sea grass. Don't forget frost-resistant planters so you don't have to store your pots inside over winter.

Once these elements are in place, add the finishing touches that will make your balcony sing! Flowers, greenery, artwork, lanterns with candles and colourful pillows will personalize the space. All you need is a good book to make this the perfect space to enjoy!
