Get Decorating

Canadian homes and cottages

Apparently size matters
By ANDREA RADKE, Calgary Sun

Transforming your home into a summer retreat doesn't have to end at the door. We decided to ask the experts: How do I create a tranquil space both in and outdoors just in time for summer?

Tranquility is synonymous with relaxing and the first key to creating the perfect space is choosing the right furniture, says Ron Kellsey, owner of Sojourn.

"It is so important to choose your furniture wisely. You have to pay attention to the scale of furniture compared to your space.

"Whether it's outdoors or indoors, furniture that is too large for the area will create a cramped feeling, rather than one of tranquility," says Kellsey.

Sticking to clean lines and subdued hues also works well to encourage tranquility.

"Clean lines are soothing and they really help simplify the space. By choosing neutral colours, the furniture blends in and maximizes the relaxing atmosphere."

Using a consistent colour of plants in your backyard, as well as indoors, can also maintain a sense of peace, says Sabal Crafted Homes' marketing manager Chris Lu.

"A great way to create a tranquil space is with plants. Stick with the same colour family, and experiment with textures to add character. Stay away from a wild flower garden, and instead use soft greens," says Lu.

Focusing on organic materials and decorative details works in the yard, as well as your home, he adds.

"You can use stone detailing and a pea gravel landscaped yard is not only less time consuming to maintain, but the overall organic feel of it is really perfect for creating that tranquility."

Even if you have a small space, water features bring a soothing touch to any area from your deck to your great room, says Kellsey.

"Fountains, waterfalls, and water walls are the ultimate way in adding a touch of tranquility to your home. The sound of water is so soothing and it looks great."

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, set the mood with music.

"Play some soft spa-like music in your backyard. You can install backyard outdoor speakers so it's easy and always right there when you need it,says Lu"

Last but not least, don't go overboard with decor.

"You want to keep the area simple and clean with minimal distractions. You can achieve a soothing atmosphere with just the right balance of furniture and accessories whether it's outside in your yard or in your home. It's about following your tastes and doing what feels right to you."
