Amilya Antonetti invented household cleaning line Soapworks after her baby became mysteriously ill. These are her tips:
1. Improve air quality
Circulate fresh air regularly. Upgrade air filters or install a central air purification unit in your home.
2. Get more sunlight
Change fluorescent light bulbs to full-spectrum bulbs, and consider adding skylights for natural light.
3. Keep a clean carpet
Vacuum frequently and buy safer, healthier carpet. Use 100 per cent cotton or chenille instead of synthetic fiber. Try tile, true linoleum or hardwood instead.
4. Beware of bathroom cleaners
Buy all-natural cleaning products and don't store them in the bathroom.
5. Bathe safe
Use all-natural essential oils in your bath. Buy a crystal ball dechlorinator to ensure your tub is free of harmful chlorinated water.
6. Limit chlorine-based cleaners
Store chlorine products separately. Always double-rinse laundry and use chlorine bleach sparingly.
7. Avert ammonia Limit ammonia cleaners to one or two or give citrus-based products a try. Do not mix or store ammonia products with other chemical cleaners.
8. No formaldehyde
Toss synthetic materials. Look for furnishings labeled low-emission or use natural materials not treated with chemicals.
9. Deal with the dust
Wash bedding once a week in hot water and limit stuffed animals. Get rid of dusty mini-blinds; use all-cotton or all-linen curtains.
10. Peel back your paint and wallpaper
Remove toxic wall coverings, both paint and wallpaper and replace with non-toxic paint.
