April showers have done wonders for my garden. It's really starting to grow, and yes, more than weeds.
After the last snowfall melted and I cleared away the remaining leaves there was quite a bit of green poking through the dirt.
A couple of weeks later, there are tangible plants appearing. I even have my very first flowers. Two teeny tiny daffodils have grown in one corner of the yard. I can't take credit, but they're there.
It also looks like a few tulips are poking up, but it's too early for my not-so-green thumb to be certain.
The rest of what's growing I can't identify. And my curiosity is definitely piqued. I really wonder what those plants that look like asparagus will turn out to be... I'm betting against asparagus.
I've also started preparing for a summer of yardwork. I bought my first lawn mower. To keep with my green goal, I bought a push mower. It may not easily slice through the grass when I've been unable to mow for a few weeks but a little elbow grease never hurt anyone.
I made my first trip to the gardening aisle and all those flowers, herbs and trees overwhelmed me, so I went back inside to check out tools.
I decided to start small and keep it simple. I'm now the proud owner of a trowel - which I learned is the proper name for a mini garden shovel - a weeder and a cultivator, which looks like a rake and breaks up the soil.
The only other thing I could ask of my tools is that the weeder would identify the weeds - like a stud finder for the garden. That'd be great.
As I watch more growth in my garden, I'm seeing less in my lawn. So, off to my trusty hardware store/garden centre I went. I had pictures ready, but all I needed to say was that my lawn is kind of "patchy" and my helper knew right where to go.
When I looked at the big bag of "stuff" I asked for something smaller, but then I learned it wasn't just grass seed! It contained other goodies to help fix up my patchy lawn.
Don't ask what's in it, I don't know. But it looks and feels like dryer lint.
All I had to do is rake the patches to loosen up the soil, put down mixture and keep it watered. And it's the perfect time to do it, with all the rain.
With rain in the forecast I was ready to go. I broke out my new cultivator and used it as a rake to loosen the soil. I quickly realized I may not have bought enough patch mix and my lawn's in worse shape than I thought.
This job was easy enough even though I definitely could have bought more patch mix and if this works maybe I will.
Now, I'm literally going to watch grass grow.
