Light up your yard
By Andrea Radke -- Calgary Sun

Landscape lighting used to be simple.

Just a couple of decorative sconces on your doorstep and you were done, but these days, homeowners have seen the light.

We decided to ask the experts: What are some tips and trends in the world of landscape and outdoor lighting?

Homeowners want more than just ambient lighting to set the mood these days, says Michael Bornyk, president of Signature Lighting and Fans.

"Outdoor lighting has grown in popularity as people become more aware of exterior decor," says Bornyk. "They want style and functionality."

Intricate, elaborate traditional designs have replaced the plainer alternative, as more and more homeowners opt for a special individual touch.

"You are seeing a lot of etched designs in really superb iron casting. The traditional bulbs are also being replaced by compact fluorescent bulb," he adds.

"The biggest selling feature of these bulbs is that they use one-fifth of the power of a standard bulb. A compact fluorescent bulb only needs 13 watts to produce the same amount of light of a standard 60-watt bulb, which is a savings of about 80 percent."

Not only does decorative landscape lighting add tons of curb appeal in terms of design, but it really adds a touch of safety and security, says Perry Banadyga, outdoor lighting expert for Home Hardware.

"While the ornamental factor is huge, the security and safety of outdoor lights is really fantastic. A well-lit yard protects your home."

When installing landscape lighting, always make sure your walkway and the house numbers are well lit.

"You should always be able to see where you are about to step and it's really important, not only for guests, but safety reasons as well, that your house numbers are well lit," says Bornyk.

As environmental consciousness continues to grow, it's no surprise solar lighting is finding its way into many yards.

"It's a cost-effective, environmental way to light up your yard," says Banadyga.

When choosing the best lights for your home, always examine your lifestyle.

"If you spend a lot of time in the backyard around the patio, opt for bright decorative lights. It's really about the overall look of your home. Don't choose a light that is too small or overpowers the landscape," says Bornyk.

Cheaper isn't always better.

"Look for high-quality lights with replaceable batteries so you aren't left in the dark," suggests Banadyga.
