Garden phlox a fragrant favourite
By BRENDA RUZYCKI, Special to The Edmonton Sun

Once again the prestigious Perennial Plant Association has selected another perennial of the year.

Every year this professional organization selects a different perennial to promote.

This plant of the year program was initiated 1990 to promote the use of perennials in Canada and the United States.

Yes, we even have local professionals who are members of this association and who have the right to cast their vote for an outstanding perennial each year.

There are criteria that they have to base their decision on. First of all, the perennial must be suitable for a wide range of climates, it must have low-maintenance requirements, it must be easily propagated and exhibit multiple seasonal interest. The members of this association certainly do put in a lot of effort into selecting the plant of the year.

Now, here is the news that you have been waiting for: the perennial plant of the year for 2002 is the Phlox paniculata "David." This Zone 3 perennial is the taller of the phlox varieties and is also known to many as "summer phlox" or "garden phlox."
