Tips for creating drama in a room
By Cheryll Gillespie
Now that I’ve set the tone for this article, let me tell you about the ‘texture’ that everyone was talking about at K-BIS (The Kitchen and Bath Industry Show) held recently in Chicago: Glass.
Glass is the darling of the design world this season. Artisans, designers and suppliers alike are showing fabulous glass sinks, pedestals, shower walls, doors, flooring, counter tops and even glass walls - although they look more like works of art than functional horizontal surfaces.
I personally have been designing and specifying glass floors for a couple of years now in special spaces like powder rooms and I have been using glass mosaics and tiles for a few years already but the new glass and glass products that we are seeing are not only spectacular but they are easier to use and more readily available for all of our homes.
As Canadians we should stand proud, because one of the companies leading the way with glass is a Canadian company called Think Glass out of Montreal. Their counter tops and walls are brilliant. Some are textured, some are coloured but all our amazing and brilliant pieces of art.
Think, will personally create something for your home that works with the style and colour palette of the room that it is being designed for, truly custom and functional pieces.
Designer Note: Remember when we are talking about counter tops we can and should use glass but generally I will use at least two if not three different horizontal surfaces in every kitchen……more texture equals more pizzazz. Because it’s important to have the right texture in the right section. I don’t want to be chopping vegetables on my glass counter and nor do I want to be eating off the butcher block section. Design should always be as functional as it is beautiful.
Glass vessel sinks are nothing new, we have been bringing them home for the last half decade but how about Italian glass sinks and pedestals? All I can say is fabulous. Glass vessel sinks are still an excellent choice; today we just have more to choose from. For example, Kohler has a stunning above-the-counter thick textured glass sink in their new lineup. If you use a glass sink then you need a different and diverse texture on the counter top, walls and floor…..remember bring in a variety of textures.
Glass is an amazing material to use at home. It’s not only stunning to look at but it’s also low maintenance. A little vinegar and pure vegetable soap mixed together makes a safe and effective cleaner for all your glass surfaces . So when designing your rooms this year, especially kitchens and bathrooms, think glass. |
