The most inexpensive way to jazz up a room

I love paint! I love getting my hands dirty and considering the endless possibilities of colour. A dab here, a dab there - it is truly amazing the difference a dollop of colour can make. The best thing about it is its ability to transform an old surface.

Paint: cheap and changeable. Without a doubt, the most inexpensive and versatile designer tool. This weekend, let’s plan an unexpected paint project. Perhaps we can repaint the laundry room. Just because laundry is a thankless, endless, tiresome chore doesn’t mean we can’t do it in style.

How about painting this tiny space (even if your washer and dryer are simply stacked inside a closet) a zesty limon colour or Tiffany blue? When the painting is complete you can treat yourself to a new zebra striped laundry basket, a black leather box set to store mending supplies, and fabulous glass canisters to store and dispense your soaps from. Now, won’t you enjoy stepping foot into your revitalized, zingy laundry room? This is an easy project….maybe half a day at the most but with months of rewards to follow.

If your laundry room doesn’t need a makeover take your paint can and brush to the powder room, pantry or front hall closet. Imagine this, you open the foyer closet to hang up a guests coat, revealing a copper lined (yes, you can by copper metallic paint) coat closet.

If you do go with copper paint, plan to paint the shelving an ebony colour and buy a roll of fabulous coordinating wallpaper or gift wrap to wrap around the rod. On the shelf above the rod set coordinating storage boxes or baskets to attractively hold umbrellas, scarves and gloves.

Or how about putting away the groceries inside your stainless steel (the paint version) pantry?

If you are still looking for a weekend project how about refurbishing an old worn out piece of furniture with paint? Wood end tables get a complete makeover with a can of black paint while and old desk comes back to life when painted in a fresh white linen or lacquer red.

Consider the possibilities that paint has at home and plan to add some colour this week. This isn’t a big project just a couple of hours and a can of paint can transform a drab space and make life at home just a little more inspiring.
