Looking to the past for future trends

I am especially fond of Asian pieces for the home -- Cheryll Gillespie.

This is the week that I usually write a story about what’s hot for the New Year, but I’ve already done that. Throughout the year, as soon as I stumble on what I predict to be a trend or discover a brilliant home fashion idea I share it with you. I’m not one to hold back or hoard a great decorating idea; it’s too exciting to be kept secret. Having said that, let’s take a look back at some of my articles to reconfirm what will be HOT at home for 2007.

Look back to the articles titled Rock Solid, Building Green, The Art of Flowers, Tahitian Dreams, and take note of the continuing organic trend. With Global Warming and other environmental concerns at the foremost of everyone’s mind, going green at home will be one of the more significant trends of 2007. So whether your passion is coral-inspired, rattan, drift wood rock, bamboo, botany or birch bark; look to bring some of Mother Nature’s design motifs and lots of natural textures and materials into your room. This year, go au natural.

How many times have you heard me mention my love of all that is black and white? Many times and for those of you that know me personally, you know that I have had black walls in all of my homes for the last 17 years. Not because it is a depressing colour, (because I believe that that is absolutely untrue, remember I am the eternal optimist). I love black because it is elegant, think of the little black dress and red carpet glamour. This dark shade is the perfect backdrop for every other colour, accessory, textile and texture including wood tones and art work. I also encourage black and white rooms for their natural ability to stay in vogue.

Eternally glamorous, black and white rooms are always in style, and if you feel the need to bring a change to your rooms it’s simple to work off of a black and white base. Simply add the current hot color to your BW base with the additions of a couple of new toss cushions, a group of vases, or candles and feel the change. I especially love, a black, white and lime green or yellow palette (so much so that this is how I completed my guest house a year and a bit ago). Better yet, you can change up the room with a minimal budget.

Still on the topic of black and white, look back the article that I wrote on grey last spring and you’ll understand why grey matters in 2007. A handsome charcoal will be the must have neutral for 2007.

What’s old is new again, and this is what my own home has always looked like; mixing modern with traditional, city with country, the unique with the familiar. My personal decorating philosophies are to decorate your home with things you love disregarding the out-dated idea that styles should not be mixed. A pair of antique chairs from a Paris flea market, lacquered black (shiny black lacquer will be a big trend in the New Year) sit in the same room as my ultra modern white leather sectional. Mix it up, collect fabulous treasures from around the world (look back and reread my Moroccan inspirations article).

I, personally, am especially fond of Asia and the great thing is that if you can’t travel so many of our favorite decorating stores have done the traveling for us and we can simply head downtown and literally shop the world.

Guys always play an important role in our lives and this may be their most important year in home fashion. Man spaces are very trendy; in fact, I just spent the last six months designing a bar and bathroom complete with a motorcycle vanity light for my husband’s warehouse (I’ll show you photos in the upcoming months). From the garage to the family room, look for masculine spaces to prevail.

2007 is proving to be a fabulous year for homes, so keep reading and bring the great ideas you read about and see on TV to your home.
