Superstition around the house

My friends know me to be superstitious and yes, it’s true I have been known to drive blocks out of my way in order to avoid crossing the path of a black cat but who’s to say what the consequences would be if I had not. I also have a few superstitions regarding home that I need to share with you.

An Asian girlfriend of mine let out a controlled scream one day as I dropped my handbag to the floor at her home - she said that I would have money problems if I kept dropping my bag on to the floor. Well, who wants to have money problems - we need cash for shoes and decorating projects. To this day I have never set my handbag onto a floor again.

This is the perfect example of common sense and superstition in harmony. We shouldn’t drop our clothes or handbags onto the floor, firstly it is disrespectful to the handbag, the designer and therefore we need to establish a place to put our purse or briefcase when we arrive home. A designated location perhaps a hook, a coat rack, a table or cabinet in the foyer or even a hall closet designed to accommodate handbags, coats, gloves and shoes.

Speaking of shoes, did you know it is bad luck to put your shoes on the counter? This superstition I heard a few years back while interviewing a professional psychic. To me it is common sense, the bottom of our shoes are dirty and I would never even think of cleaning or polishing them set on a countertop. A hat set on a bed can also bring bad luck so keep it on your head or in the closet.

I love candles and always have loads and loads of them in virtually every room of my home and all of them have been lit at least once as it is unlucky to have unlit candles displayed in a room. Besides, we should all light a few more candles even when we are the only ones at home - its good for the soul.

Lingering trash can also block you from new energy and opportunities. Sounds like a good reason to empty the trash cans around the house on a daily bases, especially the one under your desk.

A broken mirror is a common superstition - if you happen to break a mirror, then according to legend you must wait seven hours (one for each year of bad luck) before picking up the broken pieces.

In the kitchen, ensure that your whisk and plenty of spoons are handy as to stir anything with a fork will stir up misfortune. If you drop a fork this is a sign that you will have a female friend dropping by for a visit soon.

It is imperative to your luck for the New Year that all clocks are wound prior to midnight on New Years Eve in order to bring good fortune in the home in the New Year. The spirit in which you ring in the New Year will carry itself with you for the next twelve month so, when the clocks chime midnight and you welcome in the New Year be sure to be dancing and singing with joy.
