Lighting in each room

It is best to plan to light objects in a room, not just space. Therefore, we need to plan for areas that will eventually house some of our favourite pieces.

Plan for good general lighting in each room, ceiling light fixtures, track lighting or a chandelier.

It is a good idea to purchase your lighting fixtures before rough-in so that any special pieces can be accommodated by the electrician.

For example, I recently found a hanging light/pot rack to hang over a kitchen island.

It's a great piece, but requires four boxes instead of the three I had originally planned for.

In the master bedroom, you may opt for hanging light fixtures on either side of the bed.

Not only will this save you valuable space on the nightstands, but also it is a modern approach to bedside illumination. These fixtures will need to be mounted on the ceiling or the wall.

To create intimacy in a space, one of my secret weapons is the wall sconce -- these gorgeous fixtures are designed to cast shadows and illuminate wall space.

Look for opportunities to use them in your home, such as a hallway, either side of a fireplace, living room wall or kitchen wall.
