New Year means some new fabrics throughout trendy homes

Another year flies by -- and new opportunities and home decor adventures roll in.

What are your aspirations for 2005?

Every year, I have dreams and ambitions for all areas of my life: Family, career, health and fitness, spiritual and home decor.

Let me share with you some of my personal goals with respect to home decor for 2005.

One of my first projects for the New Year will be to update my window wardrobe.

Solid-coloured and even floral-patterned drapery panels can be easily updated with the addition of a wide vertical stripe. A bold stripe (10 to 24 in.) set between the floor and the bottom 30 in. of the panel is a fashionable way to dress your windows in 2005.

Bring in a fresh, punchy shade of orange or hot pink.

Accent shades are full of personality this year, so throw in a new set of toss cushions or a cashmere throw in a bright new accent colour. Add a pair of pillar candles in the same hue on the coffee table, a matching vase on the fireplace mantel and your home is the trendiest on the block.

Make the fur fly -- fur was hot, hot, hot on the runways this year and it is just as sizzling at home.

Try a fur blanket on the sofa or at the end of the bed. Recover the dog's bed with a faux leopard print (some of the faux furs feel and look as good as the real thing). Add a fur pillow to a favourite chair, re-upholster the ottoman with fur, or lay an animal skin rug down in front of the fireplace.

Indulge in more hands-on crafts, decor and art projects this year. Convert a spare bedroom, storage space or even the kitchen into an art studio for yourself. I certainly plan to paint some large canvases myself this year, and find a space to permanently set up my sewing machine. (With easy access, I may actually use it!)
