It was a very hard week at our house: our six-year-old dog, Malibu, lost her fight with cancer. It's just not the same without her, and everyone was moping around, looking a little lost, so I dedicate this column to her.
Malibu would have loved this fall's hits for the home: feathers she could rub her nose in; rich, distressed leathers that warm as you lie on them; vintage and faux furs to cuddle with; and sparkling Swarovski crystal accessories and papers. It's had for any girl to resist this fall's fashion must-haves.
The best interior designers take their home fashion cues from the runways. From Chanel to Marc Jacobs to Louis Vuitton, we designers watch apparel trends with intense interest.
Here are some of the exciting trends we'll be bringing home this fall:
- Sexy is back: Home is about to get a sex kitten makeover. Languorous fabrics such as chenille or washed velvet; glamorous vintage furs and skins; ostrich or crocodile-print wallpapers or ceramic tile; handsome chocolate or plumhued distressed leathers; swaggering feathered accessories; and smoky hues. A room dressed like this is simply seduction, with a capital S.
- Biker chic: Perhaps the No. 1 must-have in your closet this fall is the biker jacket. Biker chic works perfectly with the sex kitten vibe. A little bad boy at home: add a few black-leatherfringed cushions, hammered metal vases or a one-off chair dressed in dark leather and accessorized with metal studs.

- Return to basics: When the going gets tough, they say, the tough go back to basics. We saw a lot of post-recession strategies on the runway, with designers such as Prada, Ralph Lauren and even Christopher Kane showing strong basics such as pin-striped suits, tweed skirts and camel hair jackets. That may sound a little "investment banker-ish," but designers added a sexy twist, pairing a suit jacket and skirt, for example, with a corset or lacy bra (with the jacket open).
These strong classic looks come home in the form of draperies and fabulous upholstered pieces with the emphasis on security, seduction and glamour. Look for windows draped in irresistible layers of sexy ruched silks, for example, or structured pin-striped drapery panels.
