Improving bachelor-pad appeal
By 24 Hours (Elissa Scott)

Many male design clients looking to go from single to coupled are optimistic that designers can improve their dating status with decorating details. In the hopes of attracting a mate, men seek to improve their spaces with artistic and feminine touches, all without being too obvious they had assistance. In the end, guys want to look as though they have all the style in the world.

Men can easily select cars, electronics, landscaping or technical details for the home, but when creating a welcoming atmosphere boasting style and sophistication, sometimes a little guidance is needed.

A common blunder is all seats pointing to the television. Instead of creating a cozy conversation area, inviting guests to sit down and mingle, the TV is the focal point.

But a cozy conversation area is great if you are looking to court a lady and are wishing to settle in for a glass of wine on the sofa.

Access to end tables or a coffee table to rest glasses on is a must. Add decorative cushions in your favourite colours for interest, while reflecting your tastes. Toss in Asian glamour, cozy faux fur or satin fabrics, bejewelled with sequins for a New York martini lounge vibe.

Funky, vintage furniture is another great style approach that befits one's personality. It further shows that it wasn't some box store special in typical chocolate or black leather. A few eclectic furnishings bring funk and whimsy further into an otherwise ho-hum room.

Use original pieces found at flea markets, restyled for a second artsy life. One-of-a-kind statements in the form of light fixtures or fantastically bright accent tables will pop out in any room.

Commission paintings or splurge for works that light your fire. Favourite photographs enlarged and stretched over canvas also open the dialogue of where you've been and who you are. Or simply frame with unified matting and borders.

One of my guy pals lives in a loft conversion. The concrete floors were once painted in a vivid turquoise as a workshop once-upon-a-time.

With decades of chipping and staining showing through, my friend just had the entire patina epoxy-coated to create a shiny original masterpiece.

Souvenirs from faraway places display handsomely as wall art. Another guy friend has a chunky set of three beaded necklaces from Thailand hung on a wall. Other items, like boomerangs from Australia or African masks in groupings, provide artistic interest and promote conversation.

Finally, who wants to drown in an all-beige room? Be bold and paint a guest bathroom a zany colour. A brave and innovative use of colour shows that you are a fun, confident and interesting individual.
