Hotel @ home
By KRISTA SYLVESTER, Calgary Sun

Imagine stretching out across crisp, clean, Italian-sewn sheets, burying your head in a luxurious feathered pillow.

A relaxing getaway at a four-star hotel?

Nope, it's home sweet home. And designers say more people seek that luxury hotel look as an escape from the stresses of modern life.

"People stay in nice hotels and they get that luxurious feeling," says Calgary interior designer Dale Kosowan, creative director of Deepest Blue Interior Design.

"They want that pampered feeling at home. I find hotels are going the other way, though, and creating the at home feel."

Andy Bishop, director of sales and marketing for the Calgary Marriott Hotel, says many of the chain's most popular decor and luxury items -- from table lamps to bedding to housecoats -- can be bought new.

They're available at shopmarriott.com

"People are curious about the oversized shower heads. But a lot of people request the beds, for sure. It's like sleeping on a cloud," Bishop says.

"There's just a lot of little things that make a big difference. We just want people to be comfortable."

Toronto's Au Lit Fine Linen has a new Hotel Line, featuring Egyptian cotton sheets boasting a 220-thread count.

"We started selling a lot to hotels and one hotel in particular kept getting calls, so we decided to launch our hotel line," says Joanna Goodman, co-owner of Au Lit Fine Linen.

Goodman says the hotel line has been the "top seller, bar none, for at least the last five years, if not more."

She says they now have an Italian embroidery machine that allows them to embroider one, two or three lines on the bedding, creating their Loft line.

"There has just been a movement from big, dramatic bedding to simplicity and comfort," she says.

"The whole bed, the down pillow, the sheets, the duvet cover -- everything, it's not only about looking a certain way but being comfortable too. I've really seen that change and now people care as much about comfort as they do appearance."
